A Lowgap man was apparently stabbed to death Saturday on the front porch of his home, according to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office.

Levy Joe Haynes, 26, was found dead on a porch by deputies responding to a reported stabbing at 390 Big Oak Lane in Lowgap.

According to a written statement issued after 5 p.m. Monday, “witnesses indicated that Haynes had been in an ongoing confrontation throughout the day with a female at the residence.”

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the incident is considered “a stabbing death.”

“We don’t know if we have a crime,” he said. “We are continuing the investigation to determine the sequence of events that led to the death of Mr. Haynes.”

Atkinson said Haynes resided in a cabin located behind the main residence on the property, and several people inside the main property heard a commotion on the porch, calling 9-1-1 shortly after 4 p.m.

The witnesses are cooperating with authorities, said Atkinson, noting that an autopsy was performed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Monday.

The sheriff said that a kitchen knife that looked to be “a pretty good sized knife” was recovered at the scene, but declined to release any additional information.

Additional details will be reported as they become available here at mtairynews.com and in the print edition of The Mount Airy News.
