Health Department Inspections is a regular listing of inspections conducted in Surry County establishments by North Carolina health officials. The listing includes restaurants, schools, day care facilities, adult care and other facilities. The listings give the health inspector score, if applicable, along with the text of their findings in their words.
McDonald’s 29970, 512 East Atkins St., Dobson. Inspected Feb. 24, score 97.5. Violations: 1) Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage and display: Miscellaneous Sources of Contamination – C – Country ham was found stored in a bag that is not designed for food contact. Only bags intended for food contact can be used to store food products. Food Storage-Preventing Contamination from the Premises – C – A package of cookies was found open in the walk in freezer today. Keep all food products covered or protected while in refrigeration.
2) Single-use and single-service articles; properly stored and used: Equipment, Utensils, Linens and Single-Service and Single-Use Articles-Storing – C – Two open boxes of single service cups were found on the floor of the outside storage building. Keep all single service items stored at least six inches off of the floor.
3) Non-food-contact surfaces clean: Equipment, Food-Contact Surfaces, Nonfood-Contact Surfaces, and Utensils – C – Clean the inside of the fry freezer. Clean the shelving in the walk in freezer.
4) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Cleaning, Frequency and Restrictions – C – Clean the floor in the walk in freezer. Repairing-Premises, Structures, Attachments, and Fixtures-Methods – C – Repair the walls in the womens restroom where the wallpaper is peeling. Repair or replace the floor plate at the walk in cooler that is coming away from the floor.
Mount Airy High School lunch room, 1011 N. South St., Mount Airy. Inspected April 18, score 98.5. Violations: 1) Non-food-contact surfaces clean: Nonfood Contact Surfaces – C — Clean the top of equipment where needed in the kitchen (top of hot holding units, ovens, etc). Clean the microwaves in the dining room.
2) Garbage and refuse properly disposed; facilities maintained: Area, Enclosures and Receptacles, Good Repair – C — Several of the outdoor trash cans have holes at the bottom that would allow liquids to leak out. These need to be replaced. I was able to see that 9 trash cans were in need of replacement. These were numbered as follows: A full credit deduction will be taken on future inspections if these are not replaced.
3) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Repairing-Premises, Structures, Attachments, and Fixtures-Methods – C — Sand and repaint the floor where chipping (painted areas of the kitchen and laundry room). Repair the wall to the left of the laundry room entrance. Cleaning, Frequency and Restrictions – C — Clean the walls around the dish machine and 3-compartment sink (mold/mildew growth). Replace/reapply the silicone behind the 3-compartment sink (mold/mildew stain on silicone). Clean the floor in the walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler. Floors, Walls and Ceilings-Cleanability – C — Keep all storage at least 6 inches off of the floor to facilitate cleaning (milk crates in the walk-in cooler).
Northern Hospital of Surry County food service, 830 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Inspected Feb. 26, score 95. Violations: 1) Food separated and protected: Packaged and Unpackaged Food-Separation, Packaging, and Segregation – P – A container of raw hamburger (meat ball mix) was found in a bowl on a cart above bread in the kitchen prep area. The meatball mix was then moved on to the prep table and then ready to eat food prep was conducted next to the container. Keep all raw meats separate from ready to eat foods while in storage and preparation. The meatball mix was relocated and contaminated surfaces sanitized to correct the violation.
2) Proper hot holding temperatures: Potentially Hazardous Food (Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food), Hot and Cold Holding – P – Rice was found off of temperature control with a temperature of 102 degrees F. Hamburgers and chicken tenders were found on the tray line and cupped chili was found on the grill serving line with a temeprature below 135 degrees F. Keep all potentially hazardous foods at or above 135 degrees F. when holding them hot. The rice was voluntarily thrown away, cupped chili was cooled and all other items were reheated to correct the violation.
3) Consumer advisory provided for raw or undercooked foods: Consumption of Animal Foods that are Raw, Undercooked, or Not Otherwise Processed to Eliminate Pathogens – PF – A consumer advisory was not present for the grill today for eggs that may be served undercooked. A consumer advisory must be present when a food item is served raw or undercooked. A consumer advisory was posted to correct the violation.
4) Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage and display: Food Display-Preventing Contamination by Consumers – P – Keep the sneeze guard adjusted to cover all of the food product on display at the customer sandwich prep area. The sneeze guard was adjusted to correct the violation. 3-305.11 Food Storage-Preventing Contamination from the Premises – C – Two bags of powdered sugar were found tied off in storage today. Keep all dry foods in a sealed container or otherwise protected while in storage.
5) Utensils, equipment and linens: properly stored, dried and handled: Equipment, Utensils, Linens and Single-Service and Single-Use Articles-Storing – C – Clean the ice scoop storage container and the inside of the container lid storage bin.
Pilot Mountain Elementary School lunch room, 202 Friends St., Pilot Mountain. Inspected feb. 23, score 98. Violations: 1) Proper cold holding temperatures: Potentially Hazardous Food (Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food), Hot and Cold Holding – P – Two pans of pizza were found on the prep table with a temperature of 75 degrees F. where it had been left out for an hour prior to inspection. Keep all potentially hazardous foods at or below 45 degrees F. when holding them cold. The pizza was refrigerated to correct the violation.
2) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Floors, Walls and Ceilings-Cleanability – C – Repair the ceiling in the areas of the kitchen where pipes are exposed and the ceiling is not easily cleanable. Repair the wall above the fuse box in the dish room where a hole is present.
