Several curriculum and continuing education programs, along with staff and faculty members, were recognized by Surry Community College President Dr. David Shockley for excellence during the college’s Spring 2016 Faculty Staff Meeting held on Friday, April 29, on the Dobson campus.
Ron Hill, director of Basic Law Enforcement Training, was recognized with a resolution from the SCC Board of Trustees for the work of his division. The North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Division announced the 2015 results of the Standards Examination for SCC. Students in the daytime section of BLET achieved a passing rate of 100 percent of first-time test takers for the eighth consecutive year. Also, the Detention Officer Training Program students have achieved a passing rate of 100 percent for the third consecutive year.
Surry’s Licensed Practical Nursing students have achieved a passing rate of 100 percent for first-time test takers on the 2014 National Council Licensure Examination exceeding the state passing rate average of 78 percent and the national passing rate of 82 percent. Dr. Yvonne Johnson, Director of the Nursing Program and Associate Dean of Health Sciences, accepted the resolution from the SCC Board of Trustees on behalf of her team.
SCC Physical Therapist Assistant students have achieved a passing rate of 100 percent for first-time test takers during the fiscal year of 2015-2016 on the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy Examination. Their 100 percent exceeds the passing rate average of 86 percent of the United States Accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Programs. Eileen Coleman, Director of Physical Therapist Assistant Program, and Eric Willey, Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education, were recognized for their efforts with a resolution from the SCC Board of Trustees.
The NC Department of Public Instruction announced that for the academic year of 2014-2015, Surry Early College High School of Design had a 100 percent graduation rate and awarded the Surry Early College High School a letter grade of “A+” for overall performance, academic growth, and meeting federal performance requirements. Surry Early College Principal Kevin Via accepted the resolution from the SCC Board of Trustees.
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction announced that for the academic year of 2014-2015, Yadkin Early College High School had a 100 percent graduation rate and was also awarded the Yadkin Early College a letter grade of “A” for overall performance, academic growth, and meeting federal requirements. The Yadkin Early College was represented by its Principal Tracy Kimmer who received the resolution from the SCC Board of Trustees.
The SCC Excellence in Teaching Award recipient for 2016 is Grayson Patton. Patton has been employed at SCC since 2011 as a Biology Instructor. The Dean’s Awards for Meritorious Teaching is Dr. Dawn Worley, Office Administration Instructor.
The SCC Distinguished Staff Award recipient for 2014-15 is Kevin Edwards. Edwards is a Records/Registration Specialist and has been employed at SCC since 2006. He worked at SCC as a part-time employee four years prior to his full-time employment.
The President’s Recognition of Meritorious Service Recipients are: Darrin Billings, Assistant Systems Administrator, and Danny Holt, General Maintenance Lead Technician.
Donald Fowler, Assistant Director of the Academic Support Center, has worked at SCC for 15 years, and is a National Tutoring Association Certified Advanced-Level Tutor. His work has been published numerous times in the NTA’s internationally distributed web newsletter, The Tree. His most recent writings have addressed how to tutor students with ADHD more effectively. Fowler received the 2016 NTA’s Publications Award and was recognized during the meeting for his accomplishment.
Surry was named Military Friendly School for 2016 and has been designated “Military Friendly” every consecutive year since 2011 by Victory Media. Tammy Fletcher, Coordinator of Veterans Affairs, was recognized for her efforts in working with the college’s military students.
Kennette Thomas, English Instructor and Phi Theta Kappa’s Chapter Advisor was recognized for her exemplary service as a SCC PTK Chapter Advisor since 2010.
President Shockley also announced that two programs have been successfully re-accredited recently. The Basic Law Enforcement Training Program has been re-accredited by the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Standards Division. The Physical Therapist Assistant Program was re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
