DOBSON — A top state official will visit Surry County next week.
On Wednesday Andrew Heath, state budget director, will meet with business and government leaders at the Shelton-Badgett Center for Viticulture and Enology on Surry Community College’s campus.
Melanie Jennings, a spokesperson for the State Budget Office, said Heath will be in Dobson from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
“He will talk about the state’s economy and give an overview of the budget,” explained Jennings.
She said another topic may include the Connect N.C. Bond, which includes projects on the campus of the college and at area state parks. Heath has been on the road speaking quite frequently of late.
“He’s out there talking about how we spend taxpayer dollars,” noted Jennings.
The event, which includes a lunch, is being sponsored by the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce and the Surry County Economic Development Partnership (EDP).
“It’s an informational session,” said EDP President Todd Tucker.
According to Tucker, invitations to the event were sent to chamber members and local government officials. That stated, the event is not closed to the public.
Tucker said anybody interested in attending the event can contact the EDP or the Chamber. There is a fee, however, for the lunch.
“He’ll talk about the fundamentals and give a basic explanation of the budget process,” said Tucker. “He might also point out any sections of the budget business or government leaders should take a look at.”
The idea originated from Surry County Commissioner Larry Phillips, who helped facilitate the visit, according to Tucker.
“Hopefully those who attend will get some good information to take away from the event,” concluded Tucker.
