• An unusual breaking and entering case surfaced Wednesday in Mount Airy, according to city police department reports. A witness discovered then that an unknown suspect was living in an outbuilding without permission at a home on Welch Road owned by Shannon Tilley Gordon of Vanka Drive in Pinnacle. The intruder left the scene on foot, and damage also was noted to a doorknob of the residence from a break-in attempt.
• Michael Allen Griffith, 33, listed as homeless, was arrested Thursday for disorderly conduct at 804 Merita St., the address for a produce business where he allegedly was encountered by police cursing at people in public. Griffith was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond and slated for an Oct. 17 appearance in District Court.
• Karen Prevette Hawks, 64, of 326 Beulah Church Road, Lowgap, was served Wednesday with a criminal summons on a charge of assault and battery which had been filed that day with Jody M. Chapman of Woodlawn Drive as the complainant. Hawks is scheduled to be in Surry District Court on Oct. 28.
• A second-degree trespassing violation was issued Wednesday night against Michael Ray Norman, 46, of 327 Cherry St., after he was encountered during a civil disturbance at the Citgo outlet on West Pine Street. Norman is free on a $500 unsecured bond, but was ordered to be held in the county jail until 9 a.m. Thursday. His court date is Nov. 7.
• Michael Lee Tuttle, 53, of 148 Indian Trail, was served Monday with an outstanding criminal summons on a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after he was encountered by police during a suspicious-vehicle investigation at the Willow Centre on Willow Street. The charge had been issued on Oct. 1 of last year with Betty Foster of North Main Street as the complainant. Tuttle is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Nov. 29.
• The theft of a Tao Tao moped valued at $1,400 was discovered on Sept. 21 at the home of its owner, Justin Bruce Wilson of the 100 block of West Pine Street. The moped was listed as recovered, but no explanation was noted in police records.
• Sophia Nicole Cifuentes, 28, of 160 Calvary Drive, Unit D, was arrested on charges of larceny, larceny from a merchant and two counts of possession of stolen goods on Sept. 20 stemming from incidents at local stores. Cifuentes is accused of stealing two North Face hoodies and Sperry shoes from Main Oak Emporium on City Hall Street, valued altogether at about $180, and a fragrance, pair of pants and shirt from Belk in Mayberry Mall, valued at $102. All the property was recovered, although restitution is owed due to shirt damage. Cifuentes was jailed under a $5,000 secured bond and slated for an Oct. 24 appearance in Surry District Court.
• Violations of larceny and possession of stolen goods were filed against Kristie Michelle Krantz, 41, of 241 Rockford St., on Sept. 20 after she was encountered by police on North Main Street at Moore Avenue. Krantz is charged in connection with the theft of what are referred to in arrest records as “women’s items” valued at $57, which were stolen from an undisclosed business. The property was returned in saleable condition and Krantz is scheduled to be in District Court on Oct. 25.
• Thomas Clinton Payne, 26, of 210 Rawley Ave., was arrested on a second-degree trespassing offense on Sept. 20 at 307 N. Andy Griffith Parkway, the address for McDonald’s. Payne had been banned from that location in April 2015. He was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond, with his court date Oct. 24.
