The 25th annual Cornshucking Frolic at Horne Creek Living Historical Farm is approaching and scheduled for Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
According to Lisa Turney, the event is under new leadership following the retirement of Ricky Jessup, who formerly handled the event’s music line up and served as the emcee for the cornshucking.
“It’s going to be very bitter sweet for our staff,” Turney said of the annual event, adding that Jessup will not be able to attend the event.
“When he left, he took a chunk of the heart and soul of this place,” Turney said of Jessup.
In trying to fill the whole left by Jessup’s departure, Turney said that she’s secured some musical guests and exhibits.
Scheduled to make a much anticipated return to the event is Carson Peters, perhaps better known as “Fiddlin’ Carson Peters,” a 12-year-old fiddle player who has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Little Big Shots with Steve Harvey.
Peters recently placed ninth at the Galax Fiddlers Convention and has also made appearances at The Grand Ole Opry.
Turney said that she was anxious to secure Carson’s return to the frolic and was pleased to hear that he was available to perform at the event.
Zephyr Lightning Bolts is also scheduled to perform at the frolic, which Turney said is a new band. Other performance acts will include The Crooked Road Ramblers, The Cane Creek Cloggers, a veteran’s tribute band, and Mickey Galyean and Cullen’s Bridge.
Turney explained that music styles that will be performed at the event will range from traditional to gospel and blue grass.
A new addition to the event will be the attendance of the Model A Restorers Club of the Piedmont, which will showcase between 10 and 15 antique cars at the event.
Joel Cooper will provide demonstrations on bucket and barrel making. His will be among 50 other heritage demonstrations, ranging from quilting to curing tobacco and molasses production.
A plowing demonstration is also on tap for the event, which Turney said has been done off and on at past events.
As for vendors, so far, Turney said there will be chicken stew, barbecue, fried pies, and homemade ice.
Admission to the event is free for children 5 years of age and younger, $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 12, and $8 for adults. There will also be a parking fee.
Turney cautioned that if heavy rain is in the forecast, Horne Creek Farm will be forced to cancel the event.
