In conjunction with the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), Judicial District 17B presented awards to three of its members for outstanding and exemplary service to the community and to the profession of law.
The 2016 Centennial Award honorees are Jennifer Michaud, The Honorable A. Moses Massey and Elizabeth Southern. The awards were presented at District 17B’s annual meeting on Nov. 17, held at Luna Trail Farm and Event Center in Westfield.
Judge Massey was recognized for his extensive career as a judge and his service to the community.
His outreach in the community included assisting with Surry Friends of Youth, volunteering with a reading program at Tharrington Elementary, speaking at Dare graduations and his service to his church.
Massey is retiring as the Chief Resident Superior Court Judge for the district, having previously served as a District Court Judge before his elevation to the Superior Court bench.
Jennifer Michaud, an active member of the Walnut Cove Baptist Church, has been involved in pro bono service for Habitat for Humanity families and served as pro bono counsel for Walnut Cove Fire Department.
She has also acted as a volunteer attorney for the NCBA Lawyer on the Line program for three years and is a member of the 17B District Bar Pro Bono Committee.
Michaud has been a volunteer scoring judge for the NCBA Middle School Mock Trial competition and has also been a member of the NCBA young lawyers division.
Elizabeth Southern is associate general counsel for HanesBrands Inc.
She has served as section chair for the NCBA corporate counsel section and is also a member of the business law section and the NC Bar Association young lawyers division.
A former member of the King Rotary Club, she is the co-chair of the Triad Federalist Society and vice-chair of the Stokes Young Republicans.
Southern is an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
