Health Department Inspections is a regular listing of inspections conducted in Surry County establishments by North Carolina health officials. The listing includes restaurants, schools, day care facilities, adult care and other facilities. The listings give the health inspector score, if applicable, along with the text of their findings in their words.
Dodge City Steakhouse, 2001 N. Bridge St., Elkin. Inspected Aug. 26, score 96.5. Violations: 1) PIC present, Demonstration – Certification by accredited program, and performs duties: Certified Food Protection Manager – C- At least one employee who has supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service shall be a certified food protection manager by taking and passing an ansi accredited program (servsafe for example). This person must be present during the operations including during the inspection.
2) Equipment, food and non-food-contact surfaces approved; cleanable, properly designed, constructed and used: Good Repair and Proper Adjustment-Equipment – C- Repair the door closer on the meat walk-in cooler. Replace gaskets on the large sandwich unit and small reach-in unit on the cook line. Microwave handle broken. Replace the meat cooler where the condenser is broken. At the time of inspection, there was no food stored in the unit. Good Repair and Calibration-Utensils and Temperature and Pressure Measuring Devices – C- Thermometer inaccurate in the meat drawers. Cdi by placing a new thermometer in the unit. Replace the strainer used when dumping drinks.
3) Meets ventilation and lighting requirements; designated areas used: Intensity-Lighting – C- Replace the burned out light in the walk-in freezer and produce cooler and over the stove (hood and ceiling). Light Bulbs, Protective Shielding – C- Replace the broken shield in the produce walk-in and shield the light near the ice machine.
El Agavero Mexicano, 705 W. Independence Blvd., Mount Airy. Inspected Aug. 25. Score 97. Violations: 1) Handwashing sinks, supplied and accessible: Using a Handwashing Sink-Operation and Maintenance – PF – A cutting board and knife were found on top of the handwashing sink today. Keep the handwashing sink accessible for employee use. The cutting board and knife was removed to correct the violation.
2) Food in good condition, safe and unadulterated: Package Integrity – PF – Two large containers of tomatillo and tomato puree and one small container of condensed milk was found dented on the seal of the can in such a way that the seal may have been broken. Packages of food must be removed from stock when they become damaged in such a way that the food may have become compromised. The cans of food were removed and labled for credit.
3) Garbage and refuse properly disposed; facilities maintained: Receptacles – C – Repair or replace the outside dumpster that is leaking.
4) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Repairing-Premises, Structures, Attachments, and Fixtures-Methods – C – Repair the walk in cooler door that is rusting and is damaged on the bottom. Repair the baseboard tile near the oven.
Gondola Restaurant, 101 W. Lebanon St., Mount Airy. Inspeted Aug. 23, score 95.5. Violations: 1) Proper date marking and disposition: Ready-To-Eat Potentially Hazardous Food (Time/Temperature Control for Safety Food), Date Marking – PF- Ready to eat potentially hazardous foods prepared and held for more than 24 hours shall be marked to indicate the date by which the food shall be consumed, sold, or discarded. If food is held between 42-45 degrees f the food may be held for 4 days. If the food is held at 41 degrees f and below the food may be held for 7 days. The day of preparation shall count as day one. Please include the discard date on the food along with the prep date. Need to date mark prepared salad dressings. Cdi by owner date marking the salad dressings.
2) Thermometers provided and accurate: Temperature Measuring Devices-Functionality – C- The thermometer in the salad dressing cooler is missing. Refrigeration units shall include or be equipped with at least one permanently affixed temperature measuring device. In mechanically refrigerated food storage units, thermometers shall be located in the warmest part of the refrigeration unit.
3) Wiping cloths: properly used and stored: Wiping Cloths, Use Limitation – C- Wiping cloths shall be stored in sanitizer between 200-400 PPM In between uses. Observed sanitizer at 50 ppm quat and wet rags stored on food prep surfaces. Cdi by changing out the sanitizer and storing the rags in the sanitizer.
4) Equipment, food and non-food-contact surfaces approved; cleanable, properly designed, constructed and used: Good Repair and Proper Adjustment-Equipment – C- Repair/replace rusty shelving in the sandwich unit and walk-in cooler. Replace the gasket on the sandwich unit across from the grill. Good Repair and Calibration-Utensils and Temperature and Pressure Measuring Devices – C- The food thermometer currently used to measure food temperatures was not properly calibrated. Cdi by calibrating. Replace inaccurate thermometers in the salad cooler and the sandwich cooler across from the grill. Replace. Replace melted/cracked containers and lids. Replace spatulas that are in bad repair.
5) Non-food-contact surfaces clean: Equipment, Food-Contact Surfaces, Nonfood-Contact Surfaces, and Utensils – C- Clean tops of equipment for dust, grease, and crumbs. Clean spills and crumbs inside refrigeration units. Clean shelving.
6) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Cleaning, Frequency and Restrictions – C- Clean floors and walls under and behind equipment. Special attention needed in the grill area. Clean ceilings especially around the vents. Clean the bathroom doors and door frames. Repairing-Premises, Structures, Attachments, and Fixtures-Methods – C- Repair baseboard tile that is cracked in the grill area. Finish wall joints so they are smooth and easy to clean.
Sobotta Manor Bed and Breakfast, 347 W. Pine St., Mount Airy. Inspected Aug. 23, score 100. Violations: None.
