The weather Mount Airy experienced during January could be compared to a classic variety show — it offered something for everyone.

This included warm weather, brutally cold conditions, rain, snow, fog and frost, according to a monthly breakdown from personnel at F.G. Doggett Water Plant, the city’s official weather-monitoring station.

The highlight of the month from a climactic standpoint was a snowstorm on Jan. 7 that dumped 5.6 inches of the white stuff on the city.

This was followed by a blast of frigid air that produced the low mercury reading for the month, 6 degrees, which was noted on both Jan. 9-10.

On the other end of the scale was a 71-degree high for the month, logged on Jan. 26.

These varying readings combined to produce an average temperature of 39.9 degrees during January, more than 1.5 degrees higher than Mount Airy’s average for the month, 38.3. Weather records have been kept here since 1924.

Meanwhile, precipitation totaled 4.15 inches last month, which is 0.75 inches — or 22 percent — above the norm for the first month of the year locally, 3.40 inches.

Measurable amounts were noted on 14 of January’s 31 days, with the largest output, 1.27 inches, recorded for Jan. 23.

Mount Airy had three days with fog and five with frost.
