Members of the Mountain View Gardeners Garden Club were honored to have guests from Old Salem to present a program for their January meeting at the William Alford Moore House.
Eric Jackson, the botanist for Old Salem, tends historic garden recreations in the Single Brothers Garden and Volz lot and stewards a corresponding heirloom seed collection. He presented a program on “Heirloom Plants of Old Salem: Preserving a History of Beauty and Utility.”
Also Frances Beasley, vice president of Development at Old Salem Museums and Gardens, provided the group with much information. The speakers emphasized that the history of this Moravian town is celebrated through the preservation and restoration of the picturesque buildings, gardens and landscape. The gardens today feature open-pollinated heirlooms, with seed saving a core mission.
The Garden Club members were encouraged to visit the beautiful gardens and landscape of Old Salem and enjoy a walk through the backyard-size heirloom gardens, experience the restored landscape, and discover historic methods and practices that remain revel ant today.
