DOBSON — On Thursday officials from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office raided an alleged drug house in Dobson, resulting in three arrests and the seizure of 30 grams of crack cocaine.
At about 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, officers determined they had sufficient evidence to approach the residence located at 194 Cave Road, according to a statement from the department. As they approached the residence, the Sheriff’s Office personnel detected the odor of marijuana.
Officers knocked; they received no response but could hear the sound of urgent activity in the home. Eventually, officers breached the door, forcing their way inside, where they found five people, including two children ages 2 and 3.
Officers secured the occupants and garnered a search warrant for the premises, according to the statement. They uncovered 30 grams of crack cocaine, scales and plastic bags used in the sale of controlled substances and other various pieces of drug paraphernalia.
According to Sheriff Graham Atkinson, the 30 grams of crack has a street value of about $5,000.
Deputies also found a .38-caliber revolver which was located in an area accessible to children, according to the statement.
Mercedes Ebony Smith, 24, of 194 Cave Road, was charged with trafficking cocaine by possession, trafficking cocaine by manufacturing, maintaining a dwelling for the use and sale of controlled substances, and two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Smith was also served with two outstanding orders for arrest for failing to appear on speeding and reckless driving to endanger charges.
Terry Lavell Adams, 23, also of 194 Cave Road, was charged with trafficking cocaine by possession, trafficking cocaine by manufacturing, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, maintaining a dwelling for the use and sale of controlled substances, and two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.
Adams was a standout running back at Mount Airy High School. As a senior in 2010, he was second in yards (633) and TDs (10). In July 2012, Adams was arrested for felony possession of a Schedule II drug, which led to this week’s charge of possession of a gun by a felon.
The Surry County Department of Social Services was notified of the situation at the Cave Road address, and the children have been placed in the custody of family members, according to Atkinson.
While searching the outside at the property, deputies also located two other individuals who were hiding behind an out-building. One of those individuals, Jarik Gist, 21, of 2412 Druid Hills Drive in Winston Salem, was arrested on outstanding warrants for misdemeanor larceny, violation of probation and failing to appear in court on a charge of resisting an officer. A .380 semi-automatic handgun, which officers determined had been hidden by Gist, was also located in the search.
A Surry County magistrate set bond for Gist at $3,000, and Smith’s bond was set at $122,800. Bond for Adams was set at $210,000.
On Saturday, an official at the Surry County Detention Facility reported Smith and Adams remained in custody at the jail. Gist was transferred to Forsyth County.
