PILOT MOUNTAIN — An elderly Long Hill man has died after he was transported in critical condition following a bad burn on Friday, while in Beulah a home was destroyed by a fire on Saturday.
EMS crews responded to 346 Long Hill Road around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, where an accident had resulted in Henry Edwards, 75, being badly burned in his back yard, according to Surry County EMS Director John Shelton.
“He caught himself on fire while he was burning trash,” said Shelton. “He had some of the accelerant he was using on him, and it caught fire.”
Shelton said Edwards was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in critical condition.
On Saturday evening an official at Baptist Hospital confirmed Edwards had passed away.
Home destroyed
Firefighters from the Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call Saturday off Prison Camp Road in the Beulah community.
The call came in at 1:55 p.m. for 172 Branch Drive, according to Fire Captain Mac Casstevens.
A double-wide mobile home had caught fire at the location. Casstevens noted the fire originated from the kitchen in the home, but the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Casstevens said damage to the structure was extensive, and the home will likely be considered a total loss.
“We were able to save quite a bit of the belongings,” added Casstevens.
The property is owned by Cathy Jarvis Johnson, according to property tax records.
The Central Surry, Pine Ridge and Franklin Volunteer Fire Departments aided in the effort to extinguish the fire, which took about 30 minutes, said Cassstevens.
Casstevens noted there were no resulting injuries to fire officials or the occupants of the home.
