School boards plan meetings this week

Both city and county school boards will be meeting this week.

The Mount Airy Board of Education will be holding its regular public forum, while the Surry County Board of Education has called for two special meetings on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Tharrington Primary School will host the city board beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Numerous items are on the agenda, including a couple of recognitions for excellence: DARE officer Gerald Daniel (who works with Jones Intermediate) and Mount Airy High wrestling champions Jacob Hogue and Cody Smith.

Under action items, the agenda has listed:

A. Policy 6140, Student Wellness

B. 2017-18 Academic Calendar

C. 2017-18 Budget Message

Under reports and consent agenda items, the sheet lists:

A. Policy 3460, Graduation Requirements (First Reading)

B. Summer School Plan

C. Staff Absence Report

D. Discipline Report

E. Budget Amendments

F. Monthly Budget Report

G. Charter School Disbursements

Surry County officials have already held their regular monthly meeting in Dobson. Now they will hold two more meetings on Wednesday.

The county school board will meet at Flat Rock Elementary at 8:15 a.m.

“The purpose of this meeting is to consider a personnel matter. This meeting will include a closed session,” wrote Dr. Travis Reeves, school superintendent.

At 1 p.m. at the same location, the board members will conduct a special work session.

“The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the 2017-18 budget,” according to Reeves.
