Sixteen Surry Community College transfer students recently graduated from the Elementary Education Program at Lees-McRae College.

Those graduates are: Amber Billings of East Bend, Hannah Bowman of Mount Airy, Hannah Cook of Elkin, Chelsea Craddock of Ararat, Ashley Edwards of Cana, Va., Justine Frost of Mount Airy, Kasie Gibson of Mount Airy, Ardy Gonzalez of Mount Airy, Lea Ann Goodson of King, Samantha Hickerson of Cana, Va., Amanda Hughes of Mount Airy, Bethany Humphries of Pilot Mountain, Marlana Jarrell of Mount Airy, David Pruitt of Mount Airy, Leslie Pruitt of Mount Airy, and Laken Rodrigue of Cana, Va.

The College Transfer program at Surry gives students a head start on a bachelor’s degree before attending a four-year college or university. Students benefit by being able to explore different fields of study at a lower tuition cost than that of a four-year college, while also preparing themselves academically for the rigorous university workload.

The Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement ensures seamless articulation from a North Carolina community college to any of the signatory institutions of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, including Lees-McRae, with minimal loss of credit or repetition of work.

“Research shows that students who transfer from a community college outperform students who go straight to a four-year school,” the community college said in a recent statement. “Surry is evaluated on how well transfer students do after the transition to a university, and historically SCC has outperformed other community colleges in the state.”

College transfer students have the option to choose an Associate in Science, Associate in Arts or an Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts. All these programs are offered at the Dobson campus, and the Associate in Arts degree is also offered at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville and online.

Registration is open for fall 2017 classes. Students must register for fall classes before Aug. 1. Those classes start Aug. 15. For more information on the college transfer program, visit www.surry.edu or contact Dean of Arts and Sciences Connie Wolfe at (336) 386-3220 or wolfecr@surry.edu.
