The Mount Airy Police Department is seeking information regarding a hit-and-run incident early Friday which resulted in serious injuries to a local woman.
Police responded to a report of an injured person lying in the northbound lane of South Main Street in the Bannertown area at about 2:35 a.m. Friday.
Patrol officers and medical personnel located the victim — identified as Stephanie Dawn Davis, 38, of 197 Spoon Lane — on South Main between Gwyn Avenue and the southern entrance to the Galaxy Food Store parking lot.
Davis was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment of her injuries, which were termed severe. Capt. Alan Freeman said Friday afternoon that the victim was in serious but stable condition.
It was apparent that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, police say. However, the driver of the suspect vehicle did not remain at the scene, and the description of the auto is unknown at this time.
Video surveillance from a business located north of the accident scene shows Davis walking south on South Main Street.
Investigators believe she likely was struck between 1:25 and 2:36 a.m.
Freeman added Friday afternoon that Davis has been unable to speak with police because of her injuries, and they have been proceeding with the investigation in the absence of that input.
“We’ve run some leads — we’re still trying to ID the vehicle,” he said.
Investigators are encouraging anyone having information, particularly those traveling near the intersection of South Main Street and Westfield Road during the specified time frame, to call the Mount Airy Police Department at 336-786-3535 or Crimestoppers at 336-786-4000.
