Three Surry Community College students recently received scholarships from the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Continuing Education Scholarship program.

Introduced in 2013 by the SECU Foundation, the SECU Continuing Education Scholarship program focuses on assisting unemployed and underemployed adults, military veterans and members of the National Guard with marketable job skills for future employment by providing $750 scholarships to recipients at each of the 58 North Carolina Community Colleges.

Surry’s recent recipients are Tamika Hickman of Pilot Mountain, Kendra Moore of Mount Airy, Ally Pratt of Dobson and Kayla Zavala of Dobson. Hickman is using the SECU scholarship money to finish her degree in Cosmetology. Moore has used the SECU scholarship to successfully complete a Nurse Aide (Certified Nursing Assistant) II course. Pratt is using the scholarship funds in pursuit of a degree in nursing. Zavala was able to complete Nurse Aide II training with the assistance of the SECU funds, and hopes to eventually become a registered nurse.

Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in a program that leads to a state recognized or industry supported credential at one of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges, and should contact their college’s Corporate and Continuing Education Department for additional information. Surry’s contact number is (336) 386-3618.
