ROARING RIVER — A Roaring River man drowned late Sunday after his kayak overturned on the Yadkin River, according to a sheriff’s report released Monday morning.
Luther Lee Key, 70, of Rocky Ford Road, was boating in a tandem kayak with another man when they got caught up in overhanging trees between Roaring River and Ronda, according to Chief Deputy David Carson of the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident, which occurred at about 8 p.m., caused the kayak to overturn and Key, who was not wearing a life vest, drowned, Carson said.
Five witnesses were listed on the incident report all with the same account of what happened. The names of the additional witnesses and the other man involved were not released.
There were no other injuries, and North Carolina Wildlife officers were assisting with the investigation.
