An early morning domestic dispute in the Toast community Thursday led to the shooting of a mother and her son and the arrest of the mom’s boyfriend on felony assault and other charges.
The incident occurred at 170 Long St., off South Franklin Road just outside the Mount Airy city limits.
Deputes with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of the domestic incident shortly after 1 a.m.
“All three people involved live there,” Sheriff Jimmy Combs said.
The 37-year-old woman at the residence, Latisha Teal Chaney, had reported the domestic dispute. The caller said a man later identified as her boyfriend, Chad Delano Rose, 34, was armed with a handgun and had shot her son, Devan Skyler Upchurch, age 17.
She then advised that the suspect shot her.
Surry Emergency Services Director John Shelton said EMS crews transported the two shooting victims to area hospitals, the youth in critical condition and the woman in serious but stable condition.
The female victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem and her son to Northern Hospital of Surry of Surry County. He later was transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.
Rose has been charged with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill and felonious possession of a stolen vehicle.
The latter violation relates to a 2004 Mercedes M350 located at the scene which had been reported stolen from Richmond, Virginia.
Rose additionally is charged with felony assault on medical personnel. “I don’t think that happened at the scene,” Sheriff Combs said in indicating that this alleged offense occurred in another jurisdiction.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been asked to assist in the shooting investigation, and the Mount Airy Police Department, N.C. Highway Patrol and Franklin Volunteer Fire Department also have provided assistance.
A contingent of detectives and deputies was still on the scene late Thursday morning. The house at 170 Long St. was barricaded with yellow tape and both marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles were parked along the sides of the narrow roadway.
“It’s still an active investigation,” the sheriff explained.
“The crisis part is over,” he added. “We’re trying to do a thorough investigation for the prosecution.”
No information has been released concerning what might have sparked the domestic dispute.
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their family members,” Combs said.
