American Legion Post 123 donated $500 to Sheriff Graham Atkinson’s “Give a Kid a Christmas” program Monday.
According to Atkinson, last year the program brightened the holiday for 700 Surry County children through the donations of food, clothes and toys. Atkinson said the program spends about $100 on each child.
The sheriff said he works closely with Surry County schools to identify children in need of the program. Atkinson added that the program is funded mostly through business and individual contributions.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson accepts a $500 contribution from American Legion Post 123 member Steve Hammond. The legion’s donation will go to the sheriff’s “Give a Kid a Christmas” program. Atkinson said last year the program provided food, clothes and toys to about 700 Surry County children.
