DOBSON — A house fire south of Dobson claimed the life of a 39-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon.

John Shelton, Surry County emergency services director, said 9-1-1 received a call at 1:48 p.m. from a person seeing smoke when driving by a brick home at 264 Welcome View Church Road.

Area volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, which gutted the inside of the residence. A female was pulled from the house, but had already died. She was identified as Lisa Kay White Johnson.

Further searching found no other people inside the residence, according to Shelton.

The body will be transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center this afternoon, said the EMS director, for an autopsy to be performed to verify that the fire was the cause of Johnson’s death.

As is the case with any fire fatality, Shelton said, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was contacted to assist the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Marshal.

As of Wednesday evening, fire investigators were still on the scene examining the evidence before they could determine a cause.
