DOBSON — Five instructors from Surry Community College’s Emergency Medical Program competed in the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services 26th annual Paramedic Competition state championship in Greensboro recently.
The instructors who competed were Kenneth Vaught, SCC Emergency Medical program coordinator; and SCC adjunct instructors, Dale Harold, Roger Horton, Jose Butron and Barry McMillian. Butron came out on top, winning the State Championship, alongside his competition partner, Josh LeCrone.
During the competition, teams of two participated in reenacting a scenario they could encounter while on the job. Teams were judged on their knowledge of emergency medical procedures and ability to respond well under the pressure of an intense situation. In order to be eligible to compete at the state level, each team first competed, and won, at one of North Carolina’s five regional sites.
In addition to having several Surry instructors present in the competition finals, former SCC Director of Emergency Medical Programs Kirk Killion served as a reenactor for the staged situation.
