A Mount Airy man was fatally injured in a traffic-related incident in the White Plains area during the weekend, a local public safety official said Sunday.

“He jumped out of a car during an argument,” Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said of victim Marcus Garcia Aquino of 110 Rocking Horse Trail, off Red Brush Road. There was conflicting information about his age, but Aquino is believed to be 22.

He had been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, whose identity was not readily available. She was driving a four-door passenger car on Cadle Ford Road, with Aquino as a passenger, when the incident occurred Friday about 7:10 p.m.

The man jumped from the moving vehicle that was said to be traveling about 45 mph at the time.

He died at the scene, according to Shelton, who described that as being on a “new” portion of Cadle Ford Road beyond White Plains Elementary School.

Aquino and his girlfriend reportedly had been involved in ongoing domestic problems, leading to Friday night’s fatality.

No charges are expected to be filed by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office stemming from the death, according to officials there.

“They investigated it because it was a domestic (situation),” Shelton explained.

As unusual as it might seem for someone to voluntarily jump from a moving vehicle, this weekend’s incident was not a first for Surry County, he said.

“I’ve had it happen before,” said the veteran emergency services official.
