Surry Community College is highlighting careers in Computer-Integrated Machining, Mechatronics, Engineering Design, Electronics and Welding during Advanced Manufacturing Day, scheduled for Tuesday.
Several events are slated to take place on Surry Community’s Dobson campus, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, that day.
The day will begin with tours of Surry’s Advanced Manufacturing labs for high school students from 9 a.m. to noon. These tours will give high school students insight into several programs at Surry that can lead to jobs in growing industries in North Carolina and throughout the country.
From 1 to 3 p.m., SCC students will take part in Job Connection sessions for each advanced manufacturing program and will meet with companies that commonly employ workers with advanced manufacturing skills. Students can use these sessions to gain greater insight on the industry and make professional connections that can lead to internship and employment opportunities as company representatives will accept resumes onsite.
Following the Job Connection sessions, there will be a reception from 3:30 to 4 p.m. where attendants can enjoy light refreshments served in the Knights’ Grill before listening to a presentation featuring guest speaker Ginger Hackworth, Woodroom Process area manager at Weyerhauser from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Hackworth will share her years of experience and wealth of industry knowledge, as well as background on her path to success in a traditionally male dominated field.
Tours of the Advanced Manufacturing Labs for participating companies and community members will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Surry offers an associate degree, a diploma and two certificate options in machining; an associate degree, a diploma and a certificate in mechatronics engineering technology; a certificate and diploma in engineering design technology; an associate degree and certificate in electronics engineering technology; and a diploma and multiple certificate options in welding.
The events of Advanced Manufacturing Day are free and open to the public. Reservations are needed for the reception, presentation and evening tour. High school juniors and seniors benefit by being able to take Advanced Manufacturing classes – tuition-free – through the Career & College Promise dual enrollment program. Fall registration for all students is taking place April 3 through Aug. 1.
