The Blue Ridge and Beyond series welcomes The Seldom Scene to the Historic Earle Theater on Friday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m.
The Seldom Scene, with a body of work stretching back to 1971 and early collaborations with Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, is recognized as one of the most successful bluegrass bands in America.
The Seldom Scene was one of the first bluegrass bands to embrace a non-traditional approach. The group stretched the boundaries of what was acceptable by embracing artists such as Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead while mixing it up with Merle Haggard and traditional tunes as well. In 2014 the original band was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
The current band line up is Rickie Simpkins on banjo, Dudley Connell on guitar (formerly of the Johnson Mt. Boys), Fred Travers on dobro, Lou Reid on mandolin (formerly with Ricky Skaggs) and Ronnie Simpkins on bass (formerly with The Tony Rice Unit).
The Historic Earle Theatre is located at 142 North Main Street.
